Save a Life: CPR and Other First-Aid Classes

Here are some local, regional and online options for learning CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), AED (automated external defibrillator) and first aid:

Please note that some classes offer certification — required by some employers — while others are geared toward those who simply want to learn lifesaving techniques.

Adventist Health Sonora (adventisthealth.org/sonora) offers Basic Life Support courses for healthcare providers. Upcoming classes are scheduled for 8am-noon, Mon., Nov. 27 and Mon., Dec. 18, 2017 in the hospital’s education office (Room 907). Classes are $50. For more information, call (209) 536-3280.

American Heart Association (heart.org):

  • CPR Anytime is a 20-minute, basic lifesaving-skills DVD course, designed for those who do not desire workplace certification. Kit includes manikin and more. $38.50 plus tax and shipping, shopheart.org.
  • Family & Friends CPR/AED classes are offered by John C. Fremont Healthcare District in Mariposa. This course is designed for those who do not desire workplace certification.   • Heartsaver CPR/AED and/or First Aid classes are offered by John C. Fremont Healthcare District in Mariposa. These courses are designed for those seeking certification, but are also open to others. Course descriptions available online at  jcf-hospital.com (209) 966-2734.

American Red Cross (redcross.org):

American Red Cross independent, Sonora-based instructor Jan Opie teaches CPR, AED and basic first-aid classes, evenings or weekends only, for individuals or groups. Certification available. Fees vary. (209) 532-5955, colt@sti.net.

John C. Fremont Healthcare District’s BLS Training Center in Mariposa offers the following certifications to healthcare providers:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

The American Heart Association offers these instructions for Hands-Only CPR:

“If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of any tune that is 100 to 120 beats per minute. Immediate CPR can double or even triple a person’s chance of survival.” (cpr.heart.org)
