Area 12 Agency on Aging runs a Family Caregiver Support program offering a wide range of services, including respite and educational materials, for those caring for family members.

Included are free support groups facilitated by health educators Joan Jackson and Peter Carrillo, whose business, Practical Dreamer (209-588-1835, practical-dreamer.com), helps connect individuals and families with information and resources. A free Alzheimer’s Support Group for family members and caregivers is offered every third Thursday at 1pm at the Murphys Senior Center, 65 Mitchler Ave. For more information, contact Steve Shetzline, (209) 728-1672, sshetz@goldrush.com.

Care Givers Support Group meets second and fourth Tuesdays monthly, 1-2pm, private residence in Mariposa, call for details, (209) 966-3800.

Family Caregiver Support Group meets the fourth Wednesday of each month, 10:30am-12:30pm, Amador Senior Center, 229 New York Ranch Rd., Jackson, (209) 223-0442.

Visually Impaired Persons Support (VIPS), a Modesto non-profit, facilitates a support group for blind and visually impaired persons every Wednesday from 10:30am-noon.  A caregivers support group is offered on the first Wednesday of each month from 10:30am-noon. Both groups met at Visually Impaired Persons Support Center, 1409 H Street, Modesto, (209) 522-8477, vipsmodesto.org.

  • A Sonora-based support group for blind and visually impaired persons meets on the first Tuesday of each month, 10-11:30am, Sonora Hills multipurpose room, 19601 Greenley Rd., (209) 532-2373.
